Thanks to all our patrons for voting in our Magical Movie Night poll, both online and in the library! The winner is... TREASURE PLANET! Please join us on Tuesday, June 11th at 5:30pm for this special showing! Hot popcorn and ice cream sandwiches will be provided. EVERYONE WELCOME!

The legendary "loot of a thousand worlds" inspires an intergalactic treasure hunt when 15-year-old Jim Hawkins stumbles upon a map to the greatest pirate trove in the universe in Walt Disney Pictures' thrilling animated space adventure, "Treasure Planet." Based on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told - Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" - this film follows Jim's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon.

Indiana Room: 139 Years Ago...

Did you know we have archives of all the North Manchester Newspapers, some even going back to the 1800s? Bound editions and microfilm copies can be found in the NMPL Indiana Room for research or pleasure reading.

We pulled out an 1870 issue of the the North Manchester Journal, published on Thursday, May 22nd to see what was happening in town 139 years ago!
Picture
On the front page was a stern lecture on proper courting habits from a New York minister. "It is a disgusting fact that palaver of lovers is worse than the purring of cats," Rev. Goss stated.
Picture
Turning our attention to more local matters, the comings and goings of certain Liberty Mills residents were outlined in fascinating detail! Judge Comstock appears to be on the mend (from his dive into the dam perhaps!?), Isaac Beaver's baby girl is as handsome as an "amsden peach", and the "bold and daring Colnel" got "badly scooped by his girl"!

Stop by the Indiana Room on your next visit to peruse our newspaper archives!

Did you know . . .

that Margaret Wise Brown's book "Little Fur Family" was wrapped in real rabbit's fur when it was first published ("The Important Thing About Margaret Wise Brown")?

that Venetia Burney was only 11-years-old when she named a planet ("The Girl Who Named Pluto")?

that some kids have to take a boat to get to school each day ("To Live on an Island")?

that Blue Whales are bigger than train carriages ("A Book About Whales")?

If you didn't know these things, then you will definitely want to stop by the Children's Department to check out our new books!
